University of Maryland Riggs Alumni Center

TDR has been contracted directly by the University of Maryland to review and re-design the current technology plan and to project manage the technology installation at the Riggs Alumni Center. Principal Donald M. Bailey will be heading up the TDR design team working closely with members of the University.

The project includes 9 (nine) level-1 (high tech) and level-2 (low tech) conference rooms, various offices, The Maryland Club, Crist Board room and the large Alumni Hall. The University expects to lease out all the building conference rooms to any interested parties when not in use.

The large alumni hall poses quite a challenge to Mr. Bailey with it’s 30 foot ceiling and the requirement from the architect of no visible technology. “It’s a real challenge stepping into a project this late in the process validating and verifying the infrastructure/design, and realizing you may not have enough pathways to support any design. This however is not the first time we have been faced with these challenges.”

Due to the complexity of today’s technological solutions architects need to be much more sensitive to hiring technologist that understand the total design process. Technology consultants must provide smart designs solutions that exceed the client’s expectations while remaining within budget. Though data, voice and A/V solutions are converging it’s important to pick a consultant that fully understands all three explicitly, we must not forget that they are still very separate and distinct disciplines.
